Introduction
to India
India is known
to be the enchanting land of
dreams and fantasies. It is
the
land of ancient sites, rituals
and festivals. It is a country
rich of the sacred
rivers, mighty Himalayas, saints,
sagas and myths, and tantalizing
legends with the epics of the
battlefields.
The name India was originally
applied to the country on both
banks of
river Indus by the Greeks who
served under the Hakhamanishya
or
Achaemenid emperors of ancient
Persia, or those who came with
Alexander the great. The Sanskrit
name for river Indus, Sindhu,
became Hindu, Hidu. The ancient
dialects of Iran (old Persia),
which the Greeks turned into
Indos, and this Indos is the
source of Indus, and India.
It is a densely populated country
with a population of over 900
million
people, speaking 1650 different
dialects. The constitution however
has
listed 18 principal Languages
with Hindi and English as official
languages.
The most commonly practiced
religion is Hinduism although;
there is a great mass, which
practice Buddhism, Christianity
and Muslim. India is divided
into 29 states and 5 Union Territories
with each of them having its
own charm for tourists. |
